Furniture, by Melissa Suarez del Real was one of the winners of the NISI MASA European Short Script Contest 2008.
This film shows us that It’s not clear enough whether self-assembly furniture triggers couple conflicts or if couple conflicts trigger self-assembly furniture purchase !
There were some troubles in the organization of the production and shooting because of the lack of a production crew. Melissa found a solution by speaking with friends: Old friends who study in film school offered to get some free equipment for her. Old friends who are architects volunteered to find the piece of land with a fallen building that she needs, thanks to the pathology department in their university. Old friends also know good actors. Old friends just want to help. At the end, the collective spirit of filmmaking is, at this time, working better than any production company for her.

"Snow" Workshop
After having explored the city of Istanbul (Visions of Istanbul), NISI MASA wanted to explore the opposite side of Turkey: Kars, a city in the far-east of the country. Nobel prize-winning Orhan Pamuk, a Turkish writer, was inspired by this place to write his novel “Snow”. This evocation of an old crossroad of civilisations was the starting point of this filmmaking workshop. Ten selected young Europeans were invited to shoot short films, having read the book beforehand. The aim was to show how the films will be influenced by Pamuk’s vision of this city. Kars and its inhabitants will be the subjects of the filmmaking workshop. It took place in partnership with the 13th European Film Festival on Wheels.
